Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMX racing?

BMX racing is an exciting sport for all ages where riders race BMX bikes on a dirt track featuring jumps, berms (banked corners), and rhythm sections. It's a fun, action-packed, and challenging activity for individuals and families.

What should I wear?

Safety is our priority! To ride at the track, you must wear:

  • Helmet: A full-face helmet is highly recommended, and mandatory for racing and gate practice.

  • Clothing: Long sleeve shirt and long pants made from tear resistant fabric (no jeans or track pants).

  • Gloves: Full finger gloves to protect your hands.

  • Shoes: Enclosed shoes to protect your feet.

Can I try BMX before committing to membership?

Yes! Keep an eye out for our "Come and Try" days, which are designed for newcomers to experience BMX racing. You can also visit during a general practice or racing to spectate at any time. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on these events.

Where can I buy bikes and gear?

Northern BMX has partnered with ECI store to assist members in gearing up to hit the track! Use the code "northernbmx" at the checkout for an exclusive club discount!

Who can race?

BMX racing is for everyone! From Balance Bike riders as young as 2 years old, all the way to seasoned adults, brand new beginners to pro cyclists, Northern BMX Club welcomes riders of all ages and abilities.

What else is required?

All riders should be sure to have the following organised for competition:

  • A colour coded numberplate

  • A timing transponder (for riders 8+ in competitive categories)

  • A valid race licence from AusCycling

When does the season start?

BMX racing is a year-round individual sport, which means riders can join at any time! Racing across the country begins in January and ends in December, usually only breaking for a couple of weeks. No need to wait to join in the fun!

Is the track open to the public?

The track is open to the public outside of club usage time. The track is closed to the public for riding:

Mondays 4pm - 9pm

Wednesdays 4pm - 9pm

Fridays 4pm - 10pm

Saturdays 9am - 2pm

The track may be closed at other times for special events so keep an eye out on our social media for calendar updates!

What kind of bike is required?

A 20-inch wheel BMX bike is standard for racing. 24-inch wheel "cruiser" bikes are also common. Ensure your bike is in good working order with a functional rear hand brake. For safety, please remove any mudguards, chain guards, kickstands, and reflectors before riding on the track.

Do I need a licence to participate?

Yes, AusCycling insurance is required for all riders participating in gate practice, coaching, and racing events. A range of membership options are available, including free trial memberships for newcomers.

What is the cost to participate?

Besides the AusCycling membership, there is a small fee to participate in training or race events. Please contact the club for the most current fee information or check the upcoming events HERE

What if I don't have all my gear yet?

For your first few "Come and Try" sessions, the club may have loaner helmets and bikes available. These items are limited so please contact us to enquire about gear availability.
